Delhi Travel Guide
Begin your exploration in Old Delhi with heritage monuments including the 17th-century Red Fort* (also known as Lal Qila) built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The hulking red sandstone fortress is surrounded by a defensive wall punctuated by turrets and bastions and represents the pinnacle of Mughal creativity, with striking marble palaces and elaborate ornamentation. Nearby is Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India; climb up the south tower for a bird’s-eyeview of Old Delhi. Be sure to dress appropriately with head, shoulders, and legs covered to be allowed in.
Walking tours led by local guides will give you an immersive experience
Don’t miss the chaotic markets of Chandni Chowk, where labyrinthine streets are lined with shops selling everything from clothes and jewellery to electronic goods and curios. Walking tours led by local travel guides like Masterji Kee Haveli will give you an immersive experience.
Seemingly floating above landscaped gardens, the monumental Humayun’s Tomb*, a red sandstone mausoleum topped with marble domes, is another glorious sight in Delhi. Opposite the tomb is Dargah Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia, a shrine to the 14th-century Sufi saint; time your visit to hear soulful qawwalis (devotional songs) held every Thursday evening (remember to dress conservatively). Other must-visit monuments in the capital city include Qutub Minar*, an elaborately decorated 12th-century brick minaret, and India Gate, a towering war memorial at Rajpath.
Delhi is also a shopper’s delight* — Dilli Haat is a good place to pick up handicrafts from local artisans across India; alternatively hit the state government emporiums on Baba Kharak Singh Marg near Connaught Place for pashminas, local textiles, leather goods and jewellery. Some of the most upscale shops are in Khan Market but if you are after bargains, head to the flea market stalls of Janpath or Sarojini Nagar.
