Play Airlines Launches Deal On Flights From Stewart To Europe

Starting Tuesday through April 2, travelers can save $50 off Play Airlines flights from New York Stewart International Airport to various European cities, including Paris, Dublin, Berlin and Copenhagen, among others. All are routed through Iceland, where the airline is based.

Fifty bucks might not sound like a huge price reduction, but the Icelandic budget airline’s flights are already affordable as air travel goes these days, so it adds up, especially if you’re traveling with companions. The deal is valid for flights booked from April 9 through May 31, 2023, and Sept. 3 through Oct. 29, 2023, which the airline refers to as shoulder seasons. Travelers can plug in the promo code PLAYNYC when booking flights on flyplay.com.

Play was founded by two former executives of Wow Air, which suspended operations in March 2019 and declared bankruptcy. Since June 2022, the low-cost carrier has operated daily flights from Newburgh to Reykjavik, connecting beyond to an ever-growing list of destinations. It recently announced new routes to Amsterdam, Glasgow and Venice — “just in time for travelers to plan summer trips, spring getaways and spontaneous vacations,” Play CEO Birgir Jónsson said.

Play’s most popular destinations so far — after Iceland — have been its large hubs including Paris, but also smaller hubs like Brussels. Should you want to make a stopover in Iceland en route to, say, London, no problem. The airline now has a 24/7 chatbot called Playfin that can help passengers add stopovers when booking a flight.

For Hudson Valley residents, the convenience of Stewart Airport is apparent. No long drives to JFK or LaGuardia, paying for expensive parking in Newark or schlepping north to Albany. It’s a no-frills small airport — don’t expect a duty-free shopping spree — and Play has not made any big changes since its arrival on the scene. Travelers can walk from long- or short-term parking (they’re basically side by side) to the terminal.

Even New Yorkers are choosing to reverse commute upstate to fly Play. The airline is helping them out by offering a Stewart Airport Express shuttle from Manhattan timed with its flights. It’s the only direct transit link between New York City and Stewart, Jónsson said.

“(Stewart) is a popular airport for New York and surrounding area travelers as it offers the convenience that other airports in the area do not. It is uniquely situated as a hub for travelers in Manhattan, the growing Hudson Valley area and surrounding states,” he added.

The overall low-stress pre-flight experience is an excellent selling point, but even Play cannot get around TSA guidelines.

“Although security lines are generally shorter at Stewart, Play recommends that travelers arrive at the airport three hours before an international flight based on TSA guidelines,” Jónsson said.

Fyrirgefðu (that’s “I’m sorry” in Icelandic).
