The US Set Air Travel Record Last Weekend. What Can You Expect For Flights In December?
Thanksgiving weekend travelers just set a record. Here’s how that could affect your December holiday plans:
Record holiday travel across US
The Transportation Security Administration said it screened more than 2.9 million passengers at airports across the country on Nov. 26, “which represents an agency record — the busiest day ever for air travel.” It beats the previous record set on June 30 of more than 2.8 million passengers.
In 2022, the TSA screened nearly 2.7 million people on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
AAA predicted 55.4 million Americans would travel for Thanksgiving, including Nov. 22 to Nov. 26, 4.69 million of them by plane.
To prepare for the holiday travel, the government hired more air traffic controllers and opened new East Coast routes, said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at a news conference last week.
Just 55 flights were canceled within, into or out of the U.S. on Sunday, according to flight tracking service FlightAware, and nearly 8,000 were delayed.
The TSA reminded passengers to get to the airport early for the rest of the holiday travel season.
The average domestic flight fare in the second quarter of 2023 is down 5.1% compared to the second quarter of 2022, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
In 2022, AAA estimated nearly 113 million people would travel for the holidays between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2. AAA hasn’t released its end of year predictions yet, but that’s still more than double how many it estimated would travel for Thanksgiving 2023.
Forbes reported the “bustling Thanksgiving weekend could be a litmus test for a busy winter travel season.”
