My partner, Rick, and I were among the 7.5 million estimated U.S. air travelers this holiday season, a record number since the American Automobile Association started tracking numbers in 2000. We headed from Los Angeles to New York City to visit family, longtime friends, museums and trees glistening with Christmas lights. And given the complete dearth of empty seats on our flight, the AAA estimates seem to be right.

The number of air travelers this year is dwarfed by the 108 million or so people expected to drive 50 miles or more to a holiday destination from Dec. 23 to Jan. 1. That’s the second highest since AAA started tracking in 2000.
